Out Island Nurse by William McRae Gillies (1896-1976). In 1965, Gillies painted Zel Lockhart into posterity as the archetypical Out Island Nurse. The viewer can sense from the nurse’s distant gaze and serious expression that she is aware of the magnitude of her work. Yet, she leans into the morning, coat on one arm and valise in hand, ready to meet any challenge. -- H.A. Munnings, 2014. Extract from his book Healthcare in the Bahamas.
The Hilda Bowen Library is named in honour of former Princess Margaret Hospital Matron, Hilda Bowen.
