- Dr. Keva Bethel
A notable academician, Dr. Keva Bethel studies at Queen’s College, upon graduating she went on to receive a Bachelor’s degree in 1959 and a Master’s degree in 1963 studying languages. In 1979 she was fortunate enough to be granted a study leave by the College to pursue a Doctorate in Educational Administration at the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, and graduated in 1981.
In July 1982 she was confirmed as Principal of The College of The Bahamas and in 1995 appointed as and became the first President of The College of The Bahamas. A position she held until her retirement in August 1998. Dr. Bethel played a pivotal role in the development of the College, she spearheaded the initiative to make The College of The Bahamas a credible institution that is respected locally, regionally, and internationally. She has been instrumental in fostering various programs such as the Teacher Education Programme, she also played a leading role in integrating the School of Nursing. She also transformed the College from Associate Degree status to the baccalaureate level in several academic and professional disciplines.
Her contribution to education in The Commonwealth of The Bahamas is unparalleled. Dr. Bethel served as Chairman of the National Task Force on Education in 1993; a member of the University of the West Indies Faculty of Education Review Team in 1992 and a member of the Committee of Experts established by CARICOM Heads of Government to report on the system of legal education in the Caribbean. She had been recognized and acknowledged as an outstanding educator and scholar for many years in The Bahamas, both regionally and internationally. Her Majesty the Queen awarded her the Companion of the Order of St. Michael and St. George (CMG) in 1995 for distinguished services to the Commonwealth of the Bahamas.
She was married to the last E. Clement Bethel and is the mother of two children, Edward and Nicolette.
