An acronym, of course! ORCID stands for “Open Researcher & Contributor ID”. The ORCID Organization is an open, non-profit group working to provide a registry of unique researcher identifiers and a transparent method of linking research activities and outputs to these identifiers.
An ORCiD will be a permanent identifier for you - to avoid mistaken identity should you share a name with other researchers, or if you have changed your name or you have used variations of your name. ORCiDs is a permanent identifier to protect your scholarly identity.
